Translating for Children is not a book on translations of children's literature but a book on translating for children. It is concentrating on human action in translation and focuses on the translator, the translation process, and translating for children, in particular. Translators never translate words in isolation but whole situations. They bring to the translation their cultural heritage, their reading experience, and in the case of children's books, their image of childhood and their own child image. In so doing, they enter into a dialogic relationship that ultimately involves readers, the author, the illustrator, the translator, and the publisher.
What makes Translating for Children one of its kind is the special attention it pays to issues like the illustrations of stories, the performance (like reading aloud) of the books in translation, and the problem of adaptation. What is an adaptation? How does it differ from translating really?
The intention of Translating for Children is to demonstrate how the whole situation of translation takes precedence over any efforts to discover and reproduce the original author's intentions as a given. Rather than the authority of the author, the book concentrates on the intentions of the readers of a book in translation, both the translator and the target-language readers.
Riitta Oittinen holds a Ph.D. and docentship in translation studies and she is specializing in literary translation. She teaches translation at the translation department of Tampere University, Finland. She's the author of several books yet, in addition to her dissertation, this is her first in the English language. Riitta Oittinen is also an artist and the creator of animated films, stories, illustrations, and translations for the book
Translating for Children is suitable for teaching purpose and can be used as a course book in literary translation and children's literature.

The utopian alternatives that writers imagine are affected by many variables, such as the historical circumstances in which they write, their gender and class background, and psychological factors. These variables in turn give rise to a bewildering assortment of imagined social structures: utopian society may be centralized and regimented, or anarchic and diverse; it may be religious or secular; there may be free love or strict control of sexuality; the family may occupy a central position or it may be abolished altogether. Some utopias have detailed provisions for the distribution of wealth, while in others money and property do not exist. For all this diversity, however, one thing that exhibits far less variation is the story, the framing narrative that accounts for how the narrator or central character reaches the more perfect society and obtains the opportunity to witness its distinctive excellences. This book is about that story. It is about the curious hybrid of the traveller's tale and the classical dialogue that emerges in the Renaissance, but whose outlines remain clearly apparent even in some of the most recent utopian writing. The author investigates the ideological implications of that story, its relation to the nature of utopian desire, and the problems it continues to create even for writers who try to free themselves from its limitations. The gendered character of traditional utopian narrative is a particular concern of the study, which also provides a detailed examination of the ways in which modern feminist utopian writers have sought to rewrite what may be seen as a distinctively male myth.

It's deceptive because it's a sweet, modest but, above all, informative book (not quite what one would expect from a "philosophy of language" book) and manages to condense potentially hundreds of pages into a short, persuasive read. Unlike other publications, the information provided seeks not to elevate itself above its reader (thus confusing and confounding him or her with multi-syllable words only a lexicographer would be familiar with) but instead revels in being the reader's companion, explaining numerous concepts and ideas within five clearly-defined chapters (Words and things, Propositions and logic, Truth and reality, Speakers and hearers, Language and mind). The style and presentation of each of the chapters is non-threatening and easily accessible and even the involvement of arguably irrelevant and unrelated data, in the form of biographical information (for example did you know that Wittgenstein spent part of his time as a teacher and gardener?) is a welcome addition.
